 Map 2
 Map 3
Map of the Monongalia County Churches
Map of the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road  This is  probably the migration route the Carter Family took from either New Jersey or Pennsylvania toVirginia then to North Carolina and then on to Tennessee. I am intersted in the area down from Winchester at Watkins Ferry which was also called Williams ferry and also on the area of the north branch of the Potomac River close to Cumberland this may have been the area John Carter Jr. was in. We know Levi was in Reedsville in Preston County and Harrison County West Virginia. I suspect that the Census taker that took the information from John Carter Jr's son Elam in the 1880 Census mistakenly put New York as the place of Birth for Elam's father when it may have actually been York county Pennsylvania. or York Virginia.
Holly Bell and Barbara Lewis are a few researches looking for Caleb Carter Connections. Barbara has a web Page on Caleb Carter.
David Orr has a Webpage On Several Carter Families and he does make mention of our Line. On one of the Pages I beleive he has records of our James Carter mixed in with their James.
         Generation 2
+2.   John Carter Sr. , born around 1720 to 1730 he was possibly from Pennsylvania or New Jersey and he died around 1811 in Greene County Tennessee .Note He should not be confused with John Carder that was married to Dorcas. Our John Carter was in New York possibly when John Jr.was born and in New Jersey when Jacob was born and then around the border of Pennsylvania and West Virginia and then in Surry and Wilkes Counties of North Carolina before Moving to what became Tennessee where James was said to have been born . The area was Washington District of North Carolina and for a while The state of Franklin (lost state of Franklin) the area John Carter lived in later became Greene County Tennesee His wives are unknown to us however .
I beleive that Priscilla Williams may have been his first wife from a marriage at Christ Church in Philadelphia on June 25 1747 and I think  Rebecca Stuart may have been his second wife from a Marriage in Brunswick Co Virginia on Jan 23 1754 and if this is true then John was in the Pennsylvania area first before going to Brunswick Co Virginia and New York ? and New Jersey. I beleive John may have also had a third wife in North Carolina. This Family of Carter's later were residing on the Roaring Fork of Lick Creek in Greene County Tn. the Area that was called Carter's Station. We are currently making  progress with the Carter Cousins DNA Project that has linked a few more Carter's to John Carter.you can vist the site at http://Carter-Cousins.org/
Sylvia Brooks wrote a Book on The Carter Family. Abraham Carter Kith and Kin
John Denton Carter Also wrote a Book on the Carter's Their are errors in the book so beware
but both Books do give us good clues that may help in finding our Ancestors and do provide a good reference to our family.
 F. R. Nicholas Carter did a report on Early Pennsylvania Carters and he also listed some of the Carters that went to other areas such as Frederick Co Virginia and other areas. I will list these in five parts.

Notable Southern Families has information on our Line of Carter's but many of the records of John Carter are mixed in with the John Carter and Landon Carter Line that were married to the Maclin's and Taylors and it is hard to distinguish who is who.

My best guess or theory on John Carter would be that our Line Started in New Jersey and that we are connected to the Nicholas Carter line and that we are related to the Nathaniel Carter Branch and Barnabas Carter Family.
A close second guess would be that we are from one of the Pennsylvania Carter Families that ventured over in to West Virginia. hopefully after a little more time and a few more DNA results we will have a better idea. There is a great deal of information on the Carter Genealogy Forum from other researchers that are interested in our line.

        16.  Highly Carter married march 10 , 1808 Clarke Co Georgia to Noel F. Roberts
Noel F. Roberts, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists, received his Mexican land grant of one and one-fourth leagues on July 15, 1824. Stephen F. Austin and the Baron de Bastrop signed it. His land stretched for about one and a half miles along the north or east bank of the Brazos River and stretched about five miles north. The present-day town of Simonton in Fort Bend County is situated on the old Noel F. Roberts League.
Roberts first married Highley Carter on March 10, 1808, in Clarke County, Georgia. They had three sons: John Hardin. William Taylor, and Josiah. John Hardin and his mother both died in 1817. William and Josiah went to Texas with their father.
Roberts next married Morning Harper in Lawrence County, Mississippi, on November 19, 1820. There were probably a son and a daughter born to this marriage as the 1826 census to Austin's Colony lists Noel F. as widower age forty to fifty, farmer and stockraiser. He had four slaves, one son under seven years of age, two sons between seven and sixteen, and one daughter under seven. If Morning Harper came to Texas, she died before 1826.
He next married Harriet Pryor by marriage bond on July 26, 1826. Harriet was the oldest child of William Pryor, another of the Old Three Hundred families. To this marriage were born Elisha, Hirma, John, Mary, and Thomas Roberts.
Noel's son William married Elizabeth "Betsy" Pryor, William Pryor's youngest daughter. William and Josiah fought in the Texas Revolution. William was in the Battle of San Jacinto. He and Betsy walked the battlefield the next day with Betsy carrying her first-born son.
Noel died in the fall of 1843, leaving a large estate.

Joseph and some of his relatives have done the research on the Carter family, but have been unable to discover for sure who the parents of Elizabeth Berry are. While reading census records for the Berry project,  Susan Barlow Holmes has come  to decide that she may well be the daughter of  William Berry  and either P. Myers or Sarah Boomer, but have no way of  proving that.  I (Joe) have supplied the Census records listed above to show that the Bishop family that married a couple of Berry women were living next to William Burton Carter and Elizabeth  in the Polk County Census records in the Coldsprings district of Texas before the Bishop families relocated to Robertson County Texas and this does support that theory. They all resided in the Marion , Simpson,Covington and Copiah  Co's of Mississippi. before moving to Texas.

If anyone knows anything about the Wives or parents of John Carter Sr. that died around1811 in Greene County Tennessee or can help with the Maiden name of  Charity ( thought to be either Elam , Hamilton or Samples ?)we only know she was married to Jacob Carter son to John Sr..We are also looking for more information on William Wilkins Carter's first wife Appylonia Watson mother to William Burton Carter and daughter of Harrison Watson and Hannah Jarrel and we are seeking information on William Wilkins Carter's second wife Delila Bass a possible relative being Jere (Jeremiah )Bass we think she may have been married to a Bass before marrying our William Carter  based on a few Bass children listed in the Census records of Her and William Carter.  Note: Any Help at all will be appreciated and if you can contribute information that I can post here on this page then please contact me  Joseph Guinn Carter  or contact Shirley Hager  or please post the information on the Carter Forum.
